Home Cinema
A home theater is a dedicated space in your home designed to watch movies, television, sports, and play video games. These rooms are meant to offer you a full cinema experience; they’re usually closed (to allow you entire control over light and sound) and have a front-projector instead of a TV, similar to what you’d find at your local movie theater.
This is often referred to as a Media Room if you’re looking for a larger multi-purpose family room with a TV — possibly something open to your kitchen or utilized for a number of purposes other than entertainment. When it comes to media room design, we have a lot of ideas and expertise, but that’s a topic for another day.
A well-designed home theater room will quickly become your favorite room in the house, as many of our customers have told us over the years. The devil is in the details, as it always is with anything. Let’s look at what you’ll need to get started on your dedicated home theater budget.
Along with the projection screen, speakers are another area in which we strongly advise you to spend. We’re continually updating 20+ year old theaters, just adding additional speakers and updated components to give them the newest surround sound effects. The money spent here is well spent. Nobody has ever informed us that they overspent on speakers!
The speaker setup was selected when you designed your theater. You may have anything from five speakers and a sub in a typical 5.1 surround sound system to nine speakers and two subs in the latest object-based surround sound systems like Dolby Atmos or DTS-X, depending on which you choose.
Before we get started on your seating selections, let’s go back to the design stage for a moment. If you intend on having numerous rows of seats and did not hire an expert to design your theater, you may experience sight line concerns once your furniture is in place. Nothing is more annoying than having someone’s head in your way. On the other hand, having a screen that is too high off the ground might cause neck pain when you strain to look at it.
